Recuerdo: Latin American Photography at the AGO

Marina Dumont-Gauthier

Recuerdo: Latin American Photography at the AGO is a free digital publication that accompanies the Art Gallery of Ontario’s first group exhibition of Latin American photography. Curated by Marina Dumont-Gauthier, the catalogue brings together over fifty works spanning from the 1920s to the present day, with a focus on both well-known and lesser-seen photographs from the AGO’s growing collection. Through original texts and curatorial insights, Dumont-Gauthier explores the diverse ways photographers have captured and shaped histories across Latin America—from post-Revolutionary Mexico to Cold War-era conflicts and contemporary diasporic narratives. Highlights include the work of foundational Latin American image-makers like Manuel Álvarez Bravo and Graciela Iturbide, artists based in the diaspora such as Rafael Goldchain, and Canadian photographers who have produced some of their defining bodies of work in the region, including Reva Brooks and Michael Mitchell. The catalogue examines photography not only as a documentary tool but also as a medium for invention, imagination, and personal storytelling.

Recuerdo also marks an important step toward increasing the visibility of Latin American photography within Canadian art institutions. It lays the groundwork for future acquisitions, exhibitions, and collaborations, with the hope of fostering meaningful dialogue with Latin American artists living and working in Canada today.
